What is the Best Directory of Ezines?
Many ezine advertisers are looking for directories of ezines. Why? Because they think that they can find all the information they need in one single place and they won’t waste too much time finding an appropriate offer for their ezine advertising needs.
In theory, this is a good approach. Practice is different though …
I used to run a directory of ezines and I have been an ezine publisher since 2001. Based on this experience, let me share with you seven FACTS that led me to a conclusion some people won’t like …
1. Usually ezines directories owners don’t send publishers update requests. Period. The result? Most of the ezines info is outdated.
2. Sometimes some of the owners do send update requests. However, for various reasons, many ezine publishers don’t respond to such requests. Many directory owners don’t remove such ezines from their directory. Why? I don’t know exactly but maybe because the directory becomes a small one, and no one will be interested in it. Unfortunately the same happens with most of today’s ezine ad co-ops.
3. Other ezine publishers change their email address listed in public places (due to spam) or slightly update the prices of their advertising packages or the subscribers’ count. Minor changes that most of the time are forgotten after a while. Then … Directory owner: “Any change?” Ezine publisher: “No change, everything is just fine.”
What happens when an advertiser checks the directory listing and sends an inquiry to a publisher who changed in the meantime her/his email address? If the advertiser is lucky, the message comes back undelivered. In other cases, the advertiser waits, waits, waits, and nothing happens.
4. There are ezines directories where as an ezine publisher you cannot update your info. There are no online forms for submitting updates, the directory owner doesn’t respond to emails or her/his email address bounces.
5. An ezine publisher updates her or his website and then, if she/he is not busy, if she/he remembers, if she/he can do it, only then she/he tries to update a THIRD PARTY listing. There are many if’s as you can notice.
6. As an ezine publisher, there is NO POINT in updating some listings from some directories. Why? Some weeks after submitting an ezine, the publisher notices that many ezines directories sent a very small amount of traffic or no traffic at all. Why waste the time updating such listings?
7. Some ezine publishers stop publishing their ezines. Some of them never bother to update (delete) their third party listings. Other publishers died (R.I.P.), and they are still listed in many places.
Conclusion: you cannot rely on the info posted on third party sites. The most updated listing for an ezine is the ezine’s own website.
The following question can be raised: What is the easiest and cheapest way to find ezines’ websites?
Yep, it’s right under your nose! The best directory of ezines is GOOGLE. Google is the ezine advertiser’s best friend. Combining the proper keywords when searching, you’ll quickly find a list of ezines sites where you can continue your research until you find the best ezine advertising offer for your needs and budget.
